Entrance to Lower Antelope Canyon

Slot Canyons are actually drains for rainwater after storms.  The wide wash in this image carries runoff from storms as far as twenty miles away.  The force of the water grinds the soft Navajo sandstone and creates chasms in the earth.

Lower Antelope Canyon is such a chasm.  This particular slot canyon is unusual since it lies below the surface.  You can see the top of the slot canyon between us.  A series of steel ladders built by the Navajos takes you 80 feet down inside the slot canyon to witness incredible images like the ones included in the "Escape to New York" and "Slot Canyons" pages.
