Day 6 – Wednesday July 13 – After landing at Hilo , we stopped by the Mauna Loa Macadamia nut plantation to watch them shell, roast, coat and bag the nuts.  This is the largest Macadamia orchard in the world and they distribute their nuts worldwide.

Day 9, Saturday July 16 – aa few of us went off to explore Kona coffee mills (a disappointment) and Pu’uhonua o Honaunau Historical Park.  Although the search for coffee mills was not exciting (the mills are closed on Saturdays), we did enjoy some great coffee!  Pu’uhonua o Honaunau  is a sacred site with wood carvings and an ancient church located along a volcanic bay on the Pacific.  Doris and the M girls snorkeled in the bay and swam with sea turtles.  I laid down to relax until a Park Ranger chased me away for “loitering on sacred grounds”.  No wonder it was quiet and deserted!
